First recorded as Horalds Wood in about 1237, Harold Wood was named after King Harold Godwinson, who was defeated by William the Conqueror in 1066. This medieval theme continues in the naming of local roads, many of which are named after Anglo-Saxon Kings.
Traditionally a ward in the ancient parish of Hornchurch, Harolds Wood was reincorporated into Essex in 1892.
