Interesting Facts About Whitechapel
Named after a small chapel dedicated to St. Mary on Whitechapel Road, Whitechapel has long been a thriving London suburb. Its location on the Roman road from London to Colchester made it home to a number of coaching inns, and during the 16th century it became the heart of London’s traditional East End.
Right through until the early 20th century, the area of Whitechapel was buzzing with industries such as tanneries, breweries and foundries, and around it was around this time that prostitution also became rife. Whitechapel, complete with its thriving industries and slum housing was the image of Dickensian London, and has notorious worldwide recognition as being where Jack the Ripper carried out his infamous murders.
The area was hit hard by the Blitz in World War II, which wiped out many of the slums and also, to an extent, a lot of Whitechapel’s notoriety. Since then, it has become a highly multicultural area, with thriving Jewish and Bangladeshi communities, among many others, making up the majority of the population.
People associated with Whitechapel include musician and Blur vocalist Damon Albarn, England footballer Ashley Cole and pioneer of women’s cricket Charlotte Edwards.
