Interesting Facts About Waltham Cross

Waltham CrossTaking its name from the famous Eleanor Cross that stands in its centre, the origins of Waltham Cross go back to the the 13th century and the processional journey of Queen Eleanor’s coffin from Lincoln to Westminster Abbey. Forming part of the ancient parish of Cheshunt in Hertfordshire, its council merged with that of Cheshunt and Hoddesdon in 1974 to form the Borough of Broxbourne.

Today, the town is known for being the home of the world’s largest printworks. The ‘Park Plaza’ site produces publications including The Sun and The Times, and formerly The News of the World. The state of the art facility replaced the old press in Wapping, and is able to produce a total of over 1,000,000 newspapers an hour.

Aside from this, Waltham Cross is also the location of a large bus station, and is a key transport hub for bus links between London, Essex and Hertfordshire. It is the only settlement outside London to be served by a night bus, the N279 providing a bus link from the town directly to Trafalgar Square.

Of people associated with Waltham Cross, Victorian novelist Anthony Trollope is probably the most notable. He wrote 26 novels during the 12 years he took residence in the town, a fact recognised today by the presence of a literary themed public house on the site of his house.
