Interesting Facts About Chadwell Heath
First appearing in 1254 as Chaudewell, meaning ‘the cold spring’, the area of Chadwell Heath was initially a small settlement on the Barking side of the ancient boundary between Barking and Dagenham. The Chadwell Heath name was adopted in the 17th century following a merger between the Blackheath Common parish and Chadwell, hence the adoption of ‘Heath’
While its proximity to the London to Colchester Roman road meant sporadic settlement in the area for dating right back to Roman times, it was with the construction of the railway and consequently Chadwell Heath railway station that the locality really started to boom. Urban development really began in haste in around 1900, and continued right up to World War II, when the area suffered badly in the blitz.
Economically, Chadwell Heath has always been a centre of light industry, with Hemmings once having an enormous bakery in the area before it was closed in the 1970s. It was also once home to a paint factory and a teddy bear factory, although these have also since vanished. Today, Dairy Crest have a dairy in Chadwell Heath that supplies all of London, while the area is also home to West Ham United’s training ground.
